Criminal cases remain in police institutional memory: IGP Karki

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 23 – Police Chief Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki has said the police will bring anyone involved in criminal activities to justice regardless of how much time has passed since the crime.

Speaking to the national news agency RSS, Karki said all criminal cases remain part of the Nepal police’s institutional memory and are not forgotten. He said police have arrested and prosecuted suspects decades after crimes were committed.

“People’s memories fade in a short time but Nepal police is an institution that relentlessly fights for individual justice,” Karki said stressing that the organization would continue pursuing unresolved cases.

Karki, however acknowledged that the police have not achieved the level of success expected in addressing criminal cases.

He said perpetrators are brought under the law through detailed studies and repeated investigation processes. According to Karki, the police have formed special teams to investigate several notorious criminal cases from the past with successful results in some cases.

Investigations into other high-profile cases are continuing through the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), he said.

Karki added that the police are pursuing both recent and old criminal cases simultaneously. He said the organization remains committed to ensuring that those responsible for crimes are eventually held accountable even when investigations take years to reach a conclusion.
