Kathmandu [Nepal], August 23 – More than Rs 24 billion worth of agricultural products entered Nepal through the Kakarbhitta border point during the last fiscal year, according to the Plant Quarantine Office.
Nand Kishore Singh, head of the Plant Quarantine Office in Kakarbhitta said agricultural commodities worth Rs 24.2674 billion were imported during fiscal year 2082-83 BS. The imports included cereals, pulses, fresh vegetables and fruits sourced from India, China, Australia and Bangladesh.
Cereals and pulses accounted for the largest share of the agricultural imports, Singh said.
From India alone Nepal imported rice worth Rs 242 million and pulses worth Rs 188 million during the fiscal year.
The data also showed that 1,996 metric tonnes of gram worth Rs 182 million and 796 metric tonnes of pulses worth Rs 108 million were imported from Australia and India.
The figures highlight the significant volume of agricultural commodities entering Nepal through Kakarbhitta, one of the country’s key trade gateways in the eastern region.
Plant quarantine authorities inspect agricultural products entering through the border to ensure they meet the required health and regulatory standards before being cleared for import.
