The cabinet meeting held on Tuesday decided to put off the election scheduled for October 10 of the Civil Servants’ Trade Union, which is the official trade union of civil servants in the country. The election, which is used to pick the district, department and central level leadership from among over 50,000 civil servants, works for their benefits by providing suggestions to the government and making laws and policies relating to civil service. The cabinet meeting decided to cancel the elections, concluding that it is not an appropriate time whilst the country is grappling with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Similarly, the cabinet meeting also decided to perform the last rites of legendary climber Ang Rita Sherpa with state honors. Sherpa, popularly known as ‘Snow Leopard,’ passed away on Monday at the age of 72 in Kathmandu. He had scaled Mount Everest 10 times without supplemental oxygen.
