Bagmati Province introduces digital driver’s licenses via ‘Nagarik App’

KATHMANDU – Starting today, the Bagmati Province Transport Management Office is implementing a new system that allows drivers to access their licenses digitally through the ‘Nagarik App’ (Citizen App), eliminating the need for a physical license card after passing the driving test.

Prime Minister KP Oli announced this development via social media, stating that successful candidates will receive their driver’s licenses directly on their mobile phones.

This initiative aims to simplify the process for drivers and enhance the efficiency of service delivery. The digital license can be accessed immediately after passing the driving trial, and provisions are in place for digital payments when traffic violations occur.

Prime Minister Oli noted that this system addresses the previous challenges of obtaining printed vehicle licenses and streamlines the process for paying fines for traffic rule violations.

“This has ended the problem of not printing the vehicle license and has also removed the hassle of paying fines for violations,” he wrote. The pilot program will initially operate out of the Bagmati Province Transport Management Office, with plans to expand the services offered through the Citizen App in the future.

Prime Minister Oli emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing wait times for citizens needing various services, stating, “We hope this will help the state provide services to citizens quickly.”

This initiative follows five months of testing the digital license distribution through the Citizen App, which the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Transport of Bagmati Province announced during a program on Sunday.

To facilitate the verification of digital licenses, the ministry has equipped traffic police with 104 mobile phones, ensuring they can effectively check licenses on the go.

With this new system, the expectation is that the lengthy wait for printed license cards will soon become a thing of the past.
