The Park’s office said that one rhino was found dead at the Balmiki Tiger Reserve area in India on Monday after it was swept away by the Narayani river. CNP’s Information Officer, Ashok Ram, said that information has been received from the Balmiki Tiger Reserve that the animal died after half an hour of being washed away by the Narayani via the Gandak Barrage. Ram said that the Balmiki Tiger Reserve cremated the dead rhino after conducting a post-mortem examination as per the Indian protocol. Another rhino has been found dead at the edge of the way east of the Number 1 view tower at Bankatta Bangachhiya under the CNP’s Sauraha sector. The 12 year old male rhino was found dead with an injured head. It is suspected that the animal might have died after falling sick following a clash with another rhino. CNP stated that the back leg of the rhino was broken. However, the horn and hoof of the dead rhino is intact, Ram said. Seven rhinos have died due to various causes within three months alone in the current fiscal year inside the CNP. There are 605 rhinos inside the park at present.
