Panchasheel and Four Arya Truths are guidelines for national unity: President Paudel

KATHMANDU – President Ramchandra Paudel has said the Buddha’s principles of Panchasheel and the Four Noble Truths (Char Arya Satya) can serve as guidelines for fostering national unity, tolerance and inclusive development in the present context.

Addressing the Comprehensive Buddhist Assembly on the occasion of the 2570th Buddha Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, in the federal capital on Friday, the President stated that Buddha’s teachings are even more relevant in today’s world, which is marked by global challenges, conflict, intolerance, climate crisis and declining humanitarian values.

The Head of State said the practical implementation of Buddha’s messages of non-violence, friendship, compassion and wisdom help us build a foundation for lasting peace and prosperity. The President added that the application of Buddha’s teachings is capable of guiding the entire world toward positivity.

Buddhist philosophy which is based on peace, coexistence, the middle path and moral conduct is widely believed to have led the world toward stability, collaboration and mutual trust. He further said it is not only a matter of pride but also a responsibility that Nepal, the birthplace of Buddha, is echoing the need for the country to promote peaceful coexistence through the proper management of diversity and pluralism.

The President said, “Baisakh Shukla Purnima, which marks Buddha’s birth anniversary, enlightenment (Samyak Sambodhi) and Mahaparinirvana, is a symbol of a unique and sacred moment.”
