Kathmandu – Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, killed at least 10 people and injured dozens on Thursday according to Ukrainian authorities.
The assault came after Ukraine’s Air Force warned that ballistic missiles were heading towards the capital. Explosions echoed across central and eastern Kyiv as residents rushed to seek shelter in metro stations many carrying children and pets AFP reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyysaid dozens of people had been injured in the attack. He added that the strikes followed warnings that Moscow was preparing a large-scale assault on Ukraine.
Kyiv Military Administration chief TymurTkachenko confirmed that at least 10 people had been killed and 25 others wounded. He said the attacks deliberately targeted civilian and residential areas causing widespread damage and casualties.
The strikes triggered panic across the cityforcing residents to flee to underground shelters as air raid sirens sounded and multiple explosions were heard throughout the capital.
According to Mykola Kalashnyk, the governor of the Kyiv region five districts was affected by the attack. Emergency response teams were deployed to the impacted areas to assess the damage and assist those affected.
The latest assault is part of Russia’s continuing missile and drone campaign against Ukrainewith Kyiv remaining one of the primary targets of repeated aerial attacks. The strikes came amid heightened concerns over a possible escalation in the conflict following Ukrainian warnings that Russia was preparing a major offensive.
Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations in the affected districts as officials work to determine the full extent of the damage and casualties caused by the attack.
