Floodwaters halt drinking water supply to Kathmandu

Kathmandu – Water supply from the Melamchi Drinking Water project to Nepal’s Kathmandu valley has been temporarily suspended after floodwaters carrying highly turbid water entered the project’s intake.

According to Kathmandu UpatyakaKhanepani Limited (KUKL) spokesperson Bir Bahadur Chand, the supply of water from Melamchi to the treatment plant at Sundarijalwas halted after muddy floodwater made the treatment process difficult.

As a result, water distribution across the Kathmandu Valley has been temporarily suspended from Friday.

“The rainfall has caused the water at the intake to become extremely turbid. Once the water quality improves the treatment process will resume and water supply will be restored according to the pre-determined distribution schedule,” Chand said.

KUKL said the suspension is temporary and normal supply will resume after the water quality at the Melamchi intake returns to a level suitable for treatment.
