Kathmandu– Ganesh Nepali, a 25-year-old man from Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu, has died while receiving treatment at Bir Hospital after attempting self-immolation outside the Department of Passports in Kathmandu.
Hospital officials said he died despite receiving intensive treatment.
Earlier on Friday, Bir Hospital had said his condition was very critical and that his life was at serious risk.
Dr. Piyush Dahal, coordinator of the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department, said about 60 percent of Nepali’s body was burned. His face, head, neck and other vital parts were badly injured. He also suffered serious breathing problems and was placed on a ventilator.
Doctors had considered sending him to New Delhi, India, for advanced treatment, but his condition was too unstable for travel.
Nepali set himself on fire on Thursday after pouring petrol over himself outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor. He was rescued immediately and taken to Bir Hospital.
Following his death, the Ministry of Home Affairs called an emergency meeting to discuss the incident.
