Bangkok pub fire kills 27, dozens critically injured

Thailand [Bangkok], July 13 An explosion triggered fire at a popular pub in Thailand’s capital killed at least 27 people and left dozens injured on late Sunday. This is one of the country’s deadliest entertainment venue fires in recent years, officials said.

The blaze broke out at 11:57 pm local time at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul who visited the scene confirmed that 27 bodies had been recovered while additional victims were taken to hospitals.

According to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officials, 63 injured people were hospitalized including 22 who remain in critical condition.

Authorities said the fire spread rapidly after an explosion filled the venue with thick smoke. Based on survivor accounts many patrons fled toward the rear of the pub near the restrooms after the blaze erupted. Emergency officials said the dense smoke severely hampered escape efforts.

Firefighters arrived to find the building engulfed in smoke with rescue teams searching the premises for survivors. Authorities said several victims were found near the restroom area while emergency personnel continued recovery operations until Monday morning.

Officials said the pub had obtained the required operating permits and was equipped with fire exits. However, investigators believe the rapid spread of smoke may have prevented many people from reaching at a safe place.

Police and forensic teams have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and the fire. Evidence is being collected at the site while authorities work to identify the victims.

The incident is among the deadliest pub fires to take place in Bangkok in recent years and has provoked renewed scrutiny of fire safety measures at entertainment venues across Thailand.
