Argentina edge England, reach consecutive World Cup finals


Atlanta [US], July 16 Defending champions Argentina defeated England by 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Wednesday securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a stoppage-time winner.

Playing at Atlanta Stadium in the United States Argentina overturned a one goal deficit to book its second consecutive World Cup final appearance and the seventh in the nation’s history.

The semi-final remained tightly contested throughout the first half with both teams producing an intense and physical battle that required frequent intervention from the referee.

England broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished a precise cross from Morgan Rogers to give his side the lead. The goal prompted England to adopt a more defensive approach as it sought to protect its advantage.

Argentina maintained sustained pressure and found an equalizer in the 85th minute. Captain Lionel Messi set up Enzo Fernández who calmly finished to level the score and revive Argentina’s hopes.

With momentum firmly on its side, Argentina completed the comeback in the second minute of stoppage time. Messi again provided the assist this time delivering a cross that Lautaro Martínez headed into the net to seal victory.

The defeat marked England’s third consecutive World Cup semi-final exit while Argentina advanced to another title match in its bid to successfully defend the trophy.

Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final while England will meet France in the third place playoff after both losing semi-final encounters.
