Kathmandu [Nepal], July 23 – Nepal has earned a record 29.32 billion Nepali rupees from electricity exports to India and Bangladesh during the 2025-26 fiscal year marking the highest power export revenue in the country’s history.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), electricity exports rose by 67.96% compared with the previous fiscal year, when Nepal generated 17.46 billion rupees from cross-border power sales.
The milestone highlights Nepal’s growing role as a regional clean energy exporter, with hydropower increasingly emerging as a key driver of the country’s economy rather than solely meeting domestic electricity demand.
The NEA said the rise in exports was accompanied by a decline in electricity imports. Nepal imported electricity worth 10.56 billion rupees during the fiscal year, down from 12.92 billion rupees a year earlier.
As a result, the country recorded a net saving of nearly 19.77 billion rupees through electricity trade according to NEA data.
Nepal exports surplus electricity generated during the monsoon season when domestic production exceeds consumption. Most of the power is sold through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) in the day ahead and real time markets at competitive prices.
The NEA also supplies electricity to NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), an Indian state-owned power trading company. NVVN purchases electricity from Nepal and distributes it to the northern Indian state of Haryana.
The record earnings reflect Nepal’s expanding hydropower generation capacity and strengthening cross-border electricity trade with neighbouring countries. The government has identified power exports as a strategic source of foreign exchange and an important pillar of long-term economic growth as more hydropower projects come online.
