Kathmandu [Nepal], July 26 – Nepal congress president Gagan Thapa has postponed his planned visit to India at the last minute shelving a trip that was expected to begin over the weekend.
Thapa was initially scheduled to leave for New Delhi on Saturday to attend the convention of the party’s public relations committee. The itinerary was later revised with his departure rescheduled for Sunday.
However, the visit was called off after Thapa convened a meeting on Sunday with the party’s provincial in-charges, provincial presidents and other senior leaders in Kathmandu.
According to a high-level source, the visit was postponed after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could not be confirmed. The source said Thapa had planned to hold discussions with senior Indian political leaders during the trip, but the absence of a confirmed meeting with Modi led to the decision to defer the visit.
Neither the Nepal Congress nor Thapa’s secretariat has issued an official statement explaining the reason behind the postponement.
A new date for the India visit has not yet been announced.
The postponement comes as political engagement between Nepal and India remains closely watched, with high-level exchanges often carrying diplomatic and political significance. However, officials have not indicated when the visit could be rescheduled or whether the planned meetings with Indian leaders will be rearranged.
