Washington [US], August 2 – US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to planned military action against Iran saying a new agreement with Tehran is close to completion and could permanently address concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.
In a post on his Truth social platform Trump said Iran and several Middle Eastern countries had agreed to the framework of the proposed deal and requested that the United States suspend military operations while negotiations are finalized.
According to Trump, the agreement would include the immediate reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and measures aimed at ending Iran’s nuclear threat permanently. He also claimed Israel supports the decision to pause military action.
“Iran and other countries in the region asked us to stop because the framework of the agreement has been completed,” Trump wrote while stressing that the United States retains overwhelming military capability if diplomacy fails.
The announcement came as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate phone conversations with his counterparts in Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia warning that Tehran would respond forcefully to any attack by the United States or Israel.
The warning followed reports that Washington and Tel Aviv were preparing fresh strikes targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has continued urging both sides to return to negotiations, warning that further escalation could threaten energy security and critical infrastructure across the Gulf.
