Kathmandu [Nepal], August 3 – Bangladesh’s ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is set to make her first public appearance exactly two years after being removed from power. She will join a virtual event in New Delhi on Wednesday where she is expected to discuss her political future and the possibility of returning to Bangladesh.
According to The Times of India, Hasina will participate in an online programme organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia. The event will be livestreamed on social media and marks two years since the end of her nearly 16-year rule.
Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024 after a student-led movement against the country’s quota system escalated into nationwide anti-government protests. As demonstrations turned violent and protesters stormed government buildings she left Bangladesh and has remained in India since.
The discussion is expected to focus on Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape Hasina’s future plans and prospects for returning to the country.
Several prominent Bangladeshi political figures, former ministers, diplomats and analysts are also scheduled to participate. They include Hasina’s son and former ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy, former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nofel, Bangladesh Human Rights Watch Secretary General Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, former cricketer and lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan, former diplomat and security expert Aminul Haque Polash, political and counterterrorism analyst Abu Obaida Arin, and Bangladesh Human Rights Watch USA Director Shah Mohammad Bakhtiar.
Bangladesh has undergone major political changes since Hasina’s departure. The interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus completed its tenure following the February 2026 general election. A new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) subsequently took office with Tarique Rahman serving as prime minister.
