Kathmandu [Nepal], August 3 – Nepal’s National Assembly on Monday sought answers from the government after alleged personnel from India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) entered Nepal’s Susta border area in western Nawalparasi and dismantled a temporary embankment under construction.
During a special session of the upper house, lawmakers expressed concern over border security and urged the government to take effective diplomatic and security measures to prevent similar incidents.
Speaking in the chamber, lawmaker Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) said repeated incidents along the Nepal-India border were raising questions over Nepal’s sovereignty. Referring to Susta as well as the disputed Lipulekh-Limpiyadhura region he urged the government to lodge a strong response and ensure better protection of Nepal’s borders.
Bishwakarma also referred to reports that three Nepali youths were injured during the Susta incident asking when the government would guarantee the security of border areas and stop what he described as repeated Indian interference.
Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal lawmaker Pooja Chaudhary also called on the government to prioritise the safety of residents living in border communities.
According to local residents, a large number of armed SSB personnel some in plain clothes entered the Susta area on Sunday and allegedly demolished the temporary embankment being constructed on Nepali territory. India has not publicly responded to the allegation.
