Indian Army Chief to visit Nepal next week

Kathmandu [Nepal], August 6 – Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth will arrive in Nepal on August 16 for a five-day official visit during which he will receive the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army, officials said.

General Seth, who assumed office as the 31st Chief of the Indian Army on June 30 is visiting Nepal at the invitation of Chief of the Army Staff General Ashok Sigdel.

The conferral of honorary general ranks reflects a long-standing military tradition between Nepal and India, with both countries reciprocally awarding the distinction to each other’s army chiefs for more than seven decades.

During the visit, General Seth is also expected to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Balendra Shah. Officials familiar with the programme said a request for the meeting has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office though the meeting has not yet been officially confirmed.

The visit is expected to further reinforce the longstanding military relationship and defence cooperation between Nepal and India.
