Youth protests present fresh challenge for Modi government

New Delhi [India], August 8 – India is facing one of its most significant political challenges in recent years as youth-led protests over alleged examination irregularities have evolved into a broader movement highlighting unemployment, limited economic opportunities and growing dissatisfaction with the government’s governance.

The demonstrations led by the online group Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) spread from New Delhi to several cities, prompting the resignation of India’s education minister two weeks ago. Protesters initially demanded action against examination malpractice but later expanded their campaign to address youth unemployment, transparency and accountability.

The government has responded by introducing stricter penalties for exam paper leaks and irregularities while authorities have withdrawn cases against some protesters following allegations of excessive police force. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also increased outreach to younger audiences through social media platforms.

The protests have also sparked concerns over surveillance and digital rights after reports that authorities used artificial intelligence powered cameras to monitor demonstrators and temporarily disrupted internet services around protest sites.

Although the immediate protests have eased after some demands were addressed demonstrations continue in the eastern state of Jharkhand, where candidates have questioned the integrity of a civil service examination and called for a fresh test and an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Analysts say the movement has exposed deepening frustration among India’s youth making employment and governance key political issues ahead of the next general election.
