Kathmandu [Nepal], August 12 – Nepal has received an official invitation from Turkey for Prime Minister Balendra Shah to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled to be held in Antalya in November.
The invitation was confirmed on Wednesday by Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee.
Dhakal said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had formally invited Prime Minister Shah to participate in the global climate summit. The invitation has already been forwarded to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers although the government has yet to decide the level of Nepal’s official representation at the conference.
COP31 will take place in Antalya, Turkey from November 9 to 20 bringing together world leaders and negotiators to discuss global climate action.
Nepal is preparing to use the summit to press for greater international attention to climate justice compensation for climate-related loss and damage and the unique challenges faced by mountainous countries vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The invitation comes as Nepal continues to advocate for stronger global commitments to support developing and climate-vulnerable nations facing increasingly severe environmental and economic consequences of global warming.
