Kathmandu [Nepal], August 24 – Nepal Police have seized a large quantity of electronic goods, spare parts and tobacco products allegedly brought into the country without customs clearance at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
According to the Airport Security Office, police on August 22 detained 29-year-old Chen Junsan a resident of Guangdong, China after finding various electronic items without invoices during a security check.
Chen had arrived in Nepal on a China Eastern Airlines flight and was stopped while leaving the international arrivals customs area. The seized goods have an estimated value of Rs 7.225 million police said. He was handed over to the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office in Gauchar for further investigation and legal action.
The seized items included 265 mobile display parts, 257 mobile housings, iPhone boxes and multiple iPhone models along with batteries and five HP laptops. Police also recovered three Dell display covers and 26 bundles of Nanjing cigarettes and two bundles of Pride cigarettes.
In a separate case, police arrested 35-year-old Krishna Yadav of Dhanusha district on August 21 on suspicion of collecting gold-like yellow metal chains brought by three passengers arriving in Kathmandu via Doha.
Police said Yadav was found with three chains weighing around 75 grams and was preparing to pay the three carriers Rs 10,000 each or Rs 30,000 in total. The cash was also seized.
The seized chains were described as gold-like yellow metal but their composition was not confirmed.
Both Chen and Yadav along with the seized items were handed over to the airport customs office for investigation and action under prevailing law.
