Kathmandu [Nepal], August 30 – The death toll from the devastating flash flood that swept through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems on August 26 has reached 734, according to Nepal Police.
Data released by Nepal Police Headquarters as of 8:00 am Sunday showed that the bodies were recovered from eight districts. The highest number was recorded in Chitwan with 259 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi East with 185 and Nawalparasi West with 82.
Other deaths were reported in Gorkha (58), Nuwakot (52), Dhading (50), Tanahu (36) and Rasuwa (13).
Security personnel have rescued 2,020 people from Nuwakot, 676 from Rasuwa and three from Dhading, the police said.
Those injured in the floods are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Kathmandu. Police said 160 injured people have recovered and returned to their homes.
Meanwhile, 84 personnel from Nepal’s security agencies remain unaccounted for following the floods. They include 44 personnel from the Nepali Army, 27 from Nepal Police and 13 from the Armed Police Force.
The flash floods caused widespread destruction across several districts, leaving hundreds dead and many others displaced.
