One body recovered from Trishuli hydropower tunnel

Nuwakot [Nepal], September 4 – The body of one person has been recovered from the tunnel of the Trishuli-3 ‘A’ hydropower project in Nuwakot hours after two workers were rescued alive from the same tunnel.

The body was found by a search and rescue team deployed to locate additional people believed to be trapped inside the tunnel. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

Awas Ojha, project chief of Trishuli-3 ‘A’ said teams comprising the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and project technicians were continuing the search for others inside the tunnel.

Earlier on Friday, 30-year-old Sanjay Sah from Saptari and 45-year-old Kabir Maharjan from Kathmandu were rescued alive from the tunnel. They had been trapped there for around 10 days after the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood on August 26.

After his rescue, Sah said other people were trapped nearby. He said several workers had been with him when the incident occurred and that he became trapped while urging others to leave the tunnel. He also said some workers could be trapped in the powerhouse.

The rescue operation involves security personnel and technical teams including Nepali Army Major Milan Kumar Joshi.
