Woman rescued alive eleven days after flash flood

Kathmandu [Nepal], September 6 – It is the 11th day since a deadly flash flood struck Nepal’s northern border in Rasuwa on August 26 leaving more than 1,000 people dead and many others missing.

Amid the devastation, a 64-year-old woman was rescued alive today from a house submerged by floodwater in Betrawati of Nuwakot district.

Chandrika Shrestha was found trapped inside the mostly buried four-storey house of local resident Anand Lal Shrestha. A security team led by Police Inspector Mahendra Darnal heard faint cries for help while searching damaged structures and riverbanks.

The rescuers broke through a window and cleared sludge to reach Shrestha before bringing her to safety.

She was airlifted by Nepal army helicopter to Birendra Military Hospital where her condition was reported to be out of danger.

The rescue has renewed hopes for families still waiting for news of their missing relatives.
