Trump says Iran war may end after midterm elections

Kathmandu [Nepal], September 10 – US President Donald Trump has said he expects the war with Iran to end after the November midterm elections suggesting the conflict could continue for several more months.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday while travelling to Texas for his party’s first conference ahead of the midterm elections, Trump said Tehran could not sustain the war much longer.

“I think the war will end right after the election” Trump said, adding that Iran was trying to influence the US election so that what he described as weaker people would be elected.

Trump also said oil prices were unlikely to fall before the midterm elections but would drop sharply once the vote was over.

Oil prices rose to $100 a barrel on Wednesday as fighting in the Middle East intensified reaching the level for the first time since July.

Trump is facing growing pressure from members of his own Republican Party to end the conflict while opinion polls show weakening public support for his presidency.

He also warned that leaving Iran alone could allow it to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has repeatedly denied seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

The November midterm elections could alter the balance of power in the US government.
