Kathmandu [Nepal], September 12 – BRICS countries have unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026 after intensive negotiations Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Modi said no member country had raised objections to the declaration which was agreed after talks continued until 4 am . Members discussed contentious issues and worked to bridge differences before reaching consensus.
On the sidelines of the summit Modi held separate bilateral meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
During talks with Pezeshkian the leaders discussed safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce and ensuring the safety of seafarers. They also stressed continued efforts toward lasting regional peace and stability.
Modi and Guterres discussed India’s BRICS presidency strengthening multilateralism and the urgent need for UN reforms.
Addressing the BRICS Business Forum Modi called for increased investment and stronger commercial ties among member states, highlighting the importance of secure sea lanes for global trade.
South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mtho Xulu called for a permanent BRICS secretariat to improve institutionalisation and implementation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi praised India’s chairship saying New Delhi was well positioned to guide the expanding grouping.
