Kathmandu [Nepal], September 13 – Eighteen schools in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts were damaged by the devastating Bhotekoshi flash floods on August 26 with 11 schools completely destroyed, according to a government assessment.
The Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) prepared by the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) estimated losses to the schools at Rs 937 million.
A total of 56 school buildings were affected, while 152 rooms suffered partial damage and another 156 rooms were destroyed the report said.
In Rasuwa, four schools were affected including one in Gosaikunda Rural Municipality and three in Uttargaya Rural Municipality.
Nuwakot’s Bidur Municipality recorded damage to nine schools making it the worst-affected local level in the three districts.
In Dhading, three school buildings in Galchhi Rural Municipality and one school in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality were damaged. Another school in Siddhalek Rural Municipality also suffered losses with four of its buildings damaged in the disaster.
The government is expected to require about Rs 4.23 billion to reconstruct and restore the damaged schools, according to the assessment.
The findings highlight the significant impact of the August floods on education infrastructure in the affected districts.
