Nepal PM says disaster response continues without compromise

Kathmandu [Nepal], October 5 – Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on Monday that disaster management efforts since August 26 have been carried out in coordination with the federal, provincial and local governments with authorities working continuously without compromising their response.

Addressing the 21st meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar, Shah said the government was mobilising available resources and personnel to complete disaster management operations as soon as possible.

Chief ministers of Gandaki, Bagmati, Madhesh and Koshi provinces also attended the meeting.

PM urged the provincial leaders to remain assured that the government was working to bring disaster management efforts to an early conclusion.

He said the government was assessing damage caused by floods and landslides in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli region, Gandaki and other affected areas while continuing management efforts.

The prime minister also said the government was working to strengthen the early warning system to reduce disaster risks. He added that measures were also being taken to mitigate the risks posed by avalanches.

Shah expressed gratitude to civil servants, security personnel, volunteers and representatives of political parties who have continued working on disaster management putting their own lives at risk.

The government has been coordinating rescue, relief and other disaster response efforts since the floods and landslides that struck several areas from August 26.
