Iran says US must end pressure before talks resume

Tehran [Iran], October 21 – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said negotiations with the United States cannot produce a solution unless Washington abandons its policies of pressure, threats and sanctions.

Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, on Tuesday according to the Iranian government.

He said US policies aimed at escalating conflict had contributed to rising regional tensions including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

In a statement posted on X, the Iranian government said Pezeshkian had stressed that Washington must end its pressure, threats and sanctions before any negotiations could move forward.

Pakistan’s mediation efforts

Munir’s visit to Tehran was his fourth official trip to Iran since the ceasefire with the United States. During an earlier visit on September 2, he held talks with Pezeshkian and senior Iranian political and security officials.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said Islamabad will continue efforts to mediate between Washington and Tehran, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported.

Pakistan has maintained diplomatic contacts with both sides in an effort to ease tensions with Munir’s latest visit highlighting Islamabad’s continuing role in attempts to revive dialogue.
