New Delhi [India], October 21 – India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed opposition leader Rahul Gandhi travelled to Vietnam amid protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls but the claim has not been independently verified.
The BJP posted a video on social media platform X showing a person inside an aircraft and alleged that the individual was Gandhi. The identity of the person and the plane’s destination could not be independently confirmed.
The party accompanied the video with a sarcastic remark suggesting Gandhi was taking a break after spreading alleged misinformation.
The Congress criticised the BJP for turning Gandhi’s foreign travel into a political controversy. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said politicians from other parties also travelled abroad and questioned why Gandhi’s trips were being singled out.
BJP spokesperson R.P. Singh and party leader Shazia Ilmi accused Gandhi of avoiding political responsibilities by taking frequent holidays.
The dispute comes as Gandhi has questioned alleged irregularities in the SIR process and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
On October 12 Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition INDIA bloc leaders marched towards the Supreme Court in New Delhi over the issue. They also sought an independent audit of changes made to electoral rolls during the revision process.
