Nepali Congress urges government to protect citizens after Saudi drone incident

Kathmandu [Nepal], October 22 – Nepali Congress has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Nepali national after debris from an intercepted drone caused a fire at Saudi Arabia’s Shaybah oil field.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party paid tribute to the deceased and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Acting Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal said party president Gagan Kumar Thapa had urged the government to take more serious measures to ensure the safety of Nepali nationals working in Saudi Arabia.

The party condemned violence that claims the lives of innocent civilians describing such incidents as contrary to humanity and humanitarian values. It also expressed concern that Nepali citizens were losing their lives in a conflict in which Nepal was not directly involved.

Thapa urged the government to remain highly alert to potential risks and arrange evacuations of Nepali nationals in Saudi Arabia if necessary, according to the statement.

The party also stressed the need for diplomatic and security measures to protect Nepali citizens working in the Gulf nation.

International media reports said one Nepali and one Filipino national were killed after debris from an intercepted drone set fire to a contractor’s vehicle at the Shaybah oil field. Pakistani and Indian nationals were also injured.

Saudi authorities said the incident did not affect operations at the oil field.
