The election came after nearly two years of student protests against corruption and growing government control. The protests began after a railway station roof collapsed in 2024, killing 16 people. Vucic said the student-backed list was expected to win between 135 and 140 seats in the 250-seat parliament, while his Serbian Progressive Party would get 105 seats, based on preliminary results. Tens of thousands of people celebrated the result on the streets of Belgrade. European leaders also congratulated the student movement on its victory. The next challenge for the students will be to form a government and deliver on their promises to fight corruption and improve education.
