Ward secretary accusesd of rape remanded

MAHOTTARI – Ward secretary of the Bhangaha municipality-9 of Mahottari, Mithilesh Yadav, has remanded after being accused of rape. Following a primary hearing at the Mahottari district court on Monday, a single bench of Justice Durga Gurung sent accused ward secretary Yadav to jail.

Police had arrested Yadav on September 30 on the charge of raping a woman around his settlement in Bhangaha-9. He was accused of misbehaving and raping the woman under the influence of alcohol.

Acting on a hearing of rape case filed by the District Police Office, the district court issued a jail sentence to the ward secretary.  The district has witnessed an exponential rise of such incidents in the current fiscal year 2077/78 BS. A total of 24 incidents, including 21 rape cases and three rape attempts, have been so registered in the district during the first four months of the fiscal year, according to the District Police Office Mahottari.

The number is higher than the previous year. Rape incidents registered during the last year were 23. Such criminal incidents are reportedly increasing with the decline in the outer activities of the general public amidst the fear of coronavirus infection, shared Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Prakash Bista.
