KATHMANDU – President Bidya Devi Bhandari has met Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Vice President Bamdev Gautam.
During the half-hour long meeting held at Shital Niwas on Tuesday, President Bhandari took stock of recent developments in the ruling NCP, according to Gautam’s press coordinator Biswomani Subedi.
“The President had invited the party vice president. ‘You had played a crucial role in the past to protect the party unity. You should play a similar role this time also,’ she told him,” said Subedi.
In response to her request, Gautam told the President that they are making efforts to protect party unity and not allow the party to split, said Subedi.
The meeting of the President with a key NCP leader comes in the wake of rising tensions in the ruling party that threatens to end the ongoing unification between two communist parties which started three years ago.
“We are having discussions to protect the unity of the party that is based on system and procedure. The unity will remain intact. We will protect the unity. I am also working in favor of protecting the party unity,” Subedi quoted Gautam as saying.
The President expressed concerns about the recent escalation of internal disputes in the ruling party that has put the party on the verge of split, he said.
“She was of the view that political parties should not split. She expressed her worries about the split of the party and underlined the need to protect the unity,” said Subedi.
