Prachanda, Nepal propose NC President Deuba to launch joint protest against govt

Nepali Congress snubs NCP’s proposal to forge alliance for protest and then election

KATHMANDU: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) co-chairs Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Madhav Kumar Nepal have proposed the main opposition Nepali Congress to launch a joint protest against the government move to dissolve the House of Representatives and set dates for midterm election.

Meeting Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his own residence in Budhanilkantha on Wednesday, they have proposed the main opposition party a joint protest against the government.

In response to their proposal, Nepali Congress President Deuba told them that his party would not give a backing to the protest carried out by a faction of any political party, according to Ramesh Lekhak, a central committee member of Nepali Congress. Deuba reportedly told them that Nepali Congress would take to the street alone to protest the House dissolution.

Lekhak also said that Deuba told the NCP co chairs that the central working committee would make its stance on the protest against House dissolution clear.

“Nepali Congress has made its stance clear on House dissolution. We have to discuss any protest within the party. We cannot participate in the protest of any faction,” Lekhak quoted Deuba as saying.

Stating that Nepali Congress has already termed the move unconstitutional and undemocratic, Deuba told them that the main opposition party will accept the verdict of the Supreme Court on House dissolution case that is currently subjudice, according to Lekhak.

Prachanda and Nepal reportedly proposed Nepali Congress President Deuba to forge an electoral alliance in the upcoming election that will be held after the protest becomes successful. However, Deuba turned down the proposal of an electoral alliance, sources say.
