India calls Supreme Court’s verdict, political developments Nepal’s internal matters

Indian External Affairs Ministry refrains from weighing in on Nepal’s political developments in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s verdict to restore Lower House

KATHMANDU – India has refrained from taking a position in recent political developments in Nepal including the recent verdict of the Supreme Court to restore the House of Representatives, citing them as Nepal’s ‘internal matters’.

Asked by an Indian journalist for a comment on Nepal’s Supreme Court’s verdict to struck down the government’s decision to dissolve the House during a weekly media briefing of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Anurag Srivastava, MEA Spokesperson, said that India believes that recent political developments and the latest judgement of the Supreme Court are internal matters of Nepal.

“We have seen the judgement of 23rd February by the Supreme Court of Nepal. We have also been closely following political developments in Nepal over the last few months,” said Srivastava in response to a question of Indian journalist asking India’s reaction on Nepal’s Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate the lower house.

“As we have stated earlier, we believe that these are internal matters for Nepal to decide as per its own democratic institutions and processes,” he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled the government’s decision to dissolve the House in December last year unconstitutional and issued a verdict to reinstate the House and call the house session within 13 days.

India had not made any formal comment after the dissolution of the lower house.
