Ending a long-standing legal dispute over the name of the NCP, a joint bench of Supreme Court’s judges Kumar Regmi and Bam Kumar Shrestha today quashed the Election Commission’s decision to provide the name of NCP to the party led by KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. The verdict in favor of Kattel overturns the decision of the Election Commission to provide the name of NCP to the party formed after a merger between the then CPN (UML) and CPN (Maoist-Center). Demanding the decision of the Election Commission to provide the name of the party already registered under his leadership be quashed, Kattel had moved to the Supreme Court two years ago. Kattel had made the Election Commission the main defendant in his writ petition filed at the Supreme Court on November 21, 2018, seeking the apex court’s intervention to overrule the decision to provide the party name NCP that he has already registered to another party.
