The reference to maritime navigation reflects one of Nepal’s key concerns. As a landlocked country dependent on imports, Nepal is vulnerable to disruptions in global shipping routes and fluctuations in energy prices. Any instability affecting major oil-producing regions or critical maritime corridors can increase transportation and import costs with downstream effects on inflation and domestic markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fuel prices remain particularly sensitive to developments in West Asia. Although Nepal imports petroleum products through India, global crude oil prices influence procurement costs across the region. A reduction in geopolitical tensions could ease pressure on energy markets and help stabilise prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conflict also raised concerns for Nepali workers employed across the Gulf region. Countries in West Asia host hundreds of thousands of Nepali migrant workers whose remittances play a crucial role in the country’s economy. Escalation of regional tensions had the potential to affect employment, mobility and economic activity in host countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nepal’s statement underscores the extent to which events in West Asia can affect countries far beyond the immediate conflict zone. The government’s emphasis on peace, stability and uninterrupted maritime trade suggests that Kathmandu’s primary interest lies in mitigating economic risks and ensuring the welfare of its citizens working abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed early on Friday that the talks which were scheduled to take place in Burgenstock would not go ahead.
