Kathmandu [Nepal], July 12 –<\/strong> The renewed confrontation between the United States and Iran has again placed the Middle East countries at the centre of the global geopolitics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, China seems to be quietly strengthening its strategic position in the ongoing of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though, at first glance Beijing seems vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China is the world’s largest importer of crude oil and roughly half of its imported crude oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most fragile energy corridor. Any prolonged disruption should hurt China more than most major economies but Beijing spent years preparing precisely for this condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long before tensions escalated between US-Iran, China silently built one of the world’s largest strategic petroleum stockpiles. Estimates suggest that its combined government and commercial reserves approached 1.4 billion barrels by the end of 2025 after adding roughly 1.1 million barrels per day to storage throughout the year. Those reserves provide a critical protection against supply disruptions and reduce China’s immediate exposure to price vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China is dependent on many suppliers. While it remains the biggest buyer of discounted Iranian crude and importing around 1.4 million barrels per day in the year 2025 it simultaneously purchases large volumes from Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, the UAE and Brazil. This diversification of suppliers, gives Beijing greater flexibility than countries dependent on a single supplier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps China’s greatest advantage lies beyond oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past decade Beijing has invested heavily in renewable energy than any other country around the world. China dominates global manufacturing of solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles and wind turbines. As electric mobility expands and renewable electricity replaces fossil fuels every percentage point reduction in oil demand weakens the geopolitical leverage of energy producing states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This transition means the Strait of Hormuz remains important to China but not as existential as it once was. Analysts estimate that although about half of China’s imported crude passes through Hormuz it accounts for only around one-third of China’s total oil supply after considering domestic production and alternative transport routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diplomatically, Beijing also occupies an enviable position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Washington, China maintains trade relations with Iran while simultaneously enjoying deep economic partnership with Saudi Arabia and UAE. Beijing brokered the Saudi-Iran rapprochement in 2023 and has consistently presented itself as a supporter of dialogue rather than military intervention. Whether or not that image fully reflects reality it enhances China’s credibility across the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, every American military deployment carries enormous financial and political costs. China by contrast continues expanding trade and investing in infrastructure while avoiding direct involvement in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The greatest long-term gain may therefore be geopolitical rather than military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If countries conclude that energy security depends less on controlling the chokepoints and more on investing in renewable technologies like batteries and resilient supply chains. China stands to benefit disproportionately. It already leads global production in many of these industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US-Iran confrontation may dominate today’s headlines but its most enduring consequence could be the acceleration of a world in which economic resilience, technological leadership and energy diversification matter more than military presence. On all three fronts China has spent years preparing for precisely this moment.
