New Delhi [India], July 16 – BIMSTEC national security chiefs on Thursday agreed to strengthen regional cooperation to address terrorism, organised crime, cyber threats and maritime security while adopting new guidelines to improve coordination on humanitarian assistance and law enforcement at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decisions were taken at the fifth meeting of the BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs in New Delhi, hosted by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. National security advisers and heads of delegation from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand attended the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a statement issued after the meeting, member states discussed practical measures to combat terrorism and organised crime, strengthen security in the cyber, maritime and energy domains, improve regional connectivity and disaster management and address emerging security challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the meeting, the security chiefs adopted guidelines for the maritime component of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, aimed at enabling BIMSTEC countries to carry out relief operations more quickly during emergencies. They also endorsed guiding principles for maritime law enforcement agencies during interactions at sea to improve predictability and promote safety during maritime engagements among member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the meeting, Doval said BIMSTEC countries needed closer cooperation to deal with disruptions in global supply chains which he said had created economic hardship across member states. He urged member countries to work together, take decisive action for mutual benefit and resolve shared challenges through dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Doval also said BIMSTEC nations had made significant progress in tackling terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber threats and maritime security challenges, adding that the grouping was well placed to respond collectively to emerging threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey briefed the meeting on the progress of cooperation across the security sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the regional grouping approaches its 30th anniversary next year, the national security chiefs reaffirmed their commitment to deepen collaboration, strengthen institutional capacity and build resilience against evolving security challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
