New Delhi [India], July 20 –<\/strong> Thousands of supporters of the youth-led “Cockroach” movement gathered in New Delhi on Monday to march towards India’s Parliament demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged failures in the country’s examination system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Delhi Police denied permission for the march and deployed a heavy security presence around Jantar Mantar and the Parliament complex as the monsoon session of Parliament is underway. Officers repeatedly urged demonstrators through loudspeakers to disperse, warning that any attempt to breach security could lead to confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protest drew students, professionals and families, many carrying Indian flags and chanting slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Education Minister Pradhan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement known as the “Cockroach Janata Party” emerged in May after India’s chief justice during a hearing in an unrelated case compared some unemployed youths to cockroaches. Protesters later adopted the term as a symbol of resistance using social media to build nationwide support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public anger intensified following repeated allegations of question paper leaks in medical college and government recruitment examinations. The movement gained further momentum after activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike was taken to a government hospital by police on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protesters who have staged a sit-in at Jantar Mantar for nearly a month are demanding Pradhan’s resignation, reforms to the examination system and compensation for families of students who died by suicide following examination paper leak controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wangchuk has said he will end his nearly three-week hunger strike only if the government makes a concrete commitment to education reforms or allows protesters to reach Parliament so lawmakers can formally raise their demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While opposition leaders, civil rights groups and several Bollywood personalities have backed the protests senior government ministers have rejected calls for negotiations with Pradhan accusing demonstrators of engaging in anti-national activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
