Kathmandu [Nepal], July 23 –<\/strong> Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has begun the process of extending the Required Commercial Operation Date (RCOD) for 218 hydropower projects that have signed power purchase agreements but failed to begin commercial electricity generation on schedule due to various reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move follows a decision by the NEA Board to introduce for the first time a clear classification system that groups delayed projects into four categories based on construction progress compliance with power purchase agreement obligations and RCOD status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial phase will cover projects placed in Categories A and B which together include 218 hydropower projects. Category A comprises 150 projects with a combined capacity of 4,491 megawatts while Category B includes 68 projects with a total capacity of 1,420 megawatts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy,Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha said the government is extending project deadlines to facilitate the completion of under-construction hydropower projects rather than create difficulties for private developers. He said the process would follow an institutional framework instead of individual discretion while stressing that developers must also meet their contractual obligations on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the NEA, Nepal currently has 320 hydropower projects under construction with a combined installed capacity of 8,292 megawatts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects in Category B will be subject to regular monitoring and the NEA’s Power Trade Department will issue construction directives where necessary. The authority may reclassify projects within six months based on progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects placed in Category C will receive notices of default under their power purchase agreements. If developers fail to provide satisfactory improvements or responses the NEA said it will proceed with cancelling the agreements in accordance with existing contractual provisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
