{"id":29434,"date":"2026-07-23T15:48:59","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.kathmandupati.com\/?p=29434"},"modified":"2026-07-23T15:49:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T10:04:01","slug":"nepal-earns-record-power-export-revenue-from-neighbours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.kathmandupati.com\/?p=29434","title":{"rendered":"Nepal earns record power export revenue from neighbours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kathmandu [Nepal], July 23 &#8211;<\/strong> Nepal has earned a record <strong>29.32 billion Nepali rupees<\/strong> from electricity exports to India and Bangladesh during the 2025-26 fiscal year marking the highest power export revenue in the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), electricity exports rose by <strong>67.96%<\/strong> compared with the previous fiscal year, when Nepal generated <strong>17.46 billion rupees<\/strong> from cross-border power sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The milestone highlights Nepal&#8217;s growing role as a regional clean energy exporter, with hydropower increasingly emerging as a key driver of the country&#8217;s economy rather than solely meeting domestic electricity demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NEA said the rise in exports was accompanied by a decline in electricity imports. Nepal imported electricity worth <strong>10.56 billion rupees<\/strong> during the fiscal year, down from <strong>12.92 billion rupees<\/strong> a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the country recorded a net saving of nearly <strong>19.77 billion rupees<\/strong> through electricity trade according to NEA data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nepal exports surplus electricity generated during the monsoon season when domestic production exceeds consumption. Most of the power is sold through the <strong>Indian Energy Exchange (IEX)<\/strong> in the day ahead and real time markets at competitive prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NEA also supplies electricity to <strong>NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN)<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> an Indian state-owned power trading company. NVVN purchases electricity from Nepal and distributes it to the northern Indian state of Haryana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record earnings reflect Nepal&#8217;s expanding hydropower generation capacity and strengthening cross-border electricity trade with neighbouring countries.
