Paris [France], July 24 –<\/strong> France’s parliament has approved a bill banning children under the age of 15 from accessing social media platforms, making the country the first in the European Union to introduce such a nationwide restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill backed by President Emmanuel Macron passed the National Assembly on Tuesday by 279 votes to 81 after receiving Senate approval earlier the same day. Macron has pledged to enforce the law by September pending a review by France’s Constitutional Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the legislation, children under 15 will be prevented from creating new accounts on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat from September 1. Existing accounts held by under-15 users must be closed by January 2027. Responsibility for enforcing the rules will be with social media companies through age-verification systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Minister Anne Le H\u00e9nanff said age verification technology already exists and additional tools are being developed. She also assured lawmakers that users’ personal data would be protected during the verification process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law does not apply for educational platforms and online encyclopedias and does not impose penalties on children or their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

French authorities have cited growing concerns over the impact of social media on young people’s mental health. The country’s public health watchdog concluded last year that platforms including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram can negatively affect adolescents particularly girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France joins a growing number of countries who has tightened the online safety rules for minors following Australia’s decision last year to remove accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 or face substantial fines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
