New Delhi [India], July 25 – The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday called off its nationwide agitation with immediate effect after the Indian government agreed to its key demands following talks with the protest group’s delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision comes hours after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned amid weeks of nationwide protests over alleged exam irregularities and the NEET paper leak controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a press briefing, the CJP said the government had accepted all of its principal demands including providing the maximum possible compensation in accordance with applicable rules to the families of students who died by suicide following the NEET paper leak controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government also agreed to withdraw all FIRs filed by the Centre and BJP-led state governments in connection with the protests and said no future action would be taken against those who participated in the agitation, according to the CJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group said its five-point charter on examination and education reforms would be taken up for further discussions with the government with another meeting expected in about four weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the talks, CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said the group had sought \u20b91 crore in compensation for the affected families. He said the government agreed to provide an honorary compensation under existing rules and regulations with the maximum amount legally possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ranka said the delegation also presented its five-point reform charter, covering broader education and examination reforms, and decided to withdraw the agitation after the government agreed to consider those proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Union Minister J.P. Nadda confirmed that the government had sympathetically considered the group’s demands. He said no retaliatory action would be taken against protesters, compensation would be provided in accordance with applicable rules and the government would study the CJP’s proposals on education and examination reforms before holding further discussions with its representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Activist Sonam Wangchuk welcomed the agreement, describing it as “a victory for democracy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He congratulated the CJP, volunteers, students and supporters across the country for maintaining a peaceful movement and urged the government to pursue lasting reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“A nation isn’t built by resignation alone. There should be reform in education,” Wangchuk said, adding that he hoped the government’s response would lead to wider reforms in governance and a more compassionate style of administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
