The measure primarily targets countries with high rates of visa overstays, many of them in Africa and other developing regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bond will be refunded if a visa application is denied or if the traveller complies with visa conditions and leaves the US before the authorised stay expires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The permanent rule replaces a pilot programme that allowed bond amounts of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000. Under the new policy the $5,000 option has been eliminated while the maximum bond has been raised to $20,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy affects citizens of Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan among other countries and the State Department has indicated that additional nations could be added in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration says the programme is intended to reduce visa overstays and curb illegal immigration. Officials estimate that detaining and deporting a foreign national who remains unlawfully in the United States costs roughly $18,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government data showed that more than 45,000 people from countries covered by the programme overstayed their visas in 2024.
