Tehran [Iran], August 7 –<\/strong> Iran said it is in the final stage of drafting an agreement with Oman on the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz even as tensions continued to simmer across the Middle East with renewed violence in Lebanon and Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on Wednesday that the draft agreement with Oman was nearing completion and that a joint statement would be issued if the process was not obstructed by “certain parties” in an apparent reference to the United States. Iranian officials indicated the agreement could depend on the lifting of US restrictions affecting Iran’s ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Shipping traffic has increased in recent weeks but remains well below pre-conflict levels, according to maritime monitoring data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said two soldiers were killed and four others seriously wounded in an explosion in southern Lebanon marking Israel’s first combat fatalities since a ceasefire with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah took effect in June. Israel also carried out fresh strikes in southern Lebanon accusing Hezbollah of violating the truce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, Israeli prosecutors charged an Israeli settler with reckless manslaughter over the 2025 killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank, a rare prosecution in settler violence cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Iraq, the government warned that armed activity outside state control after Sept 30 would be prosecuted under anti-terrorism laws as Iran-aligned armed factions rejected calls to disarm. Sudan’s continuing conflict has also placed the UNESCO listed Meroe pyramids at increasing risk as preservation efforts remain suspended.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
