KATHMANDU – Former Secretary at Ministry of Home Affairs, Prem Rai, has been picked as the Chief Commissioner of the corruption watchdog Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

According to a source close to the Prime Minister, the Constitutional Council has picked Rai as the new Chief Commissioner of the CIAA and sent a letter at the parliamentary secretariat for the confirmation hearing.

The source told Kathmandu Pati that the letter seeking the confirmation hearing of the newly recommended Chief Commissioner of the apex constitutional body for corruption control was sent before President Bidya Dev Bhandari dissolved the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday.

In line with the recommendation of the cabinet meeting held on Sunday morning, President Bhandari had dissolved the House and set the date of mid-term elections for April 30 and May 10.

According to the source, the meeting of the Constitutional Council held on December 15, after the issuance of ordinance to amend the act related to the Council, decided to recommend Rai as the CIAA’s Chief Commissioner.

However, the confirmation hearing cannot take place as the House has already been dissolved. The dissolution of the House will pave the way for Rai to assume the post of CIAA Chief within 45 days. Rai is considered to be very close with Prime Minister Oli.
