Kathmandu [Nepal], August 31 – China is actively assisting in the repatriation of Nepali citizens stranded in its territory after floods and landslides in Tibet, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Monday.
Speaking about rescue and relief efforts for foreign nationals stranded at the Kerung port in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region following a landslide triggered by a glacier collapse, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China was working to help affected Nepalis return to Nepal as soon as possible.
China has also sent 50 tonnes of disaster relief supplies to Kathmandu for flood victims in Nepal. The first consignment has already arrived in the Nepali capital, the Global Times reported.
Two teams of Chinese tunnel rescue experts have been deployed to support rescue operations in disaster-hit areas of Nepal.
Guo said China had provided Nepal with disaster-area images, satellite and hydrological data, as well as early warnings and other information about a barrier lake formed upstream.
He said all Chinese nationals who had remained in contact with authorities in Nepal’s disaster-affected areas had been safely rescued and relocated by Sunday afternoon.
China said search and rescue operations were continuing for Chinese and foreign nationals who remain missing or out of contact.
Guo added that China was coordinating closely with foreign embassies in the country to identify missing foreign nationals and facilitate further arrangements for them.
