Kathmandu [Nepal], August 30 – A fresh flood in the Trishuli river swept away a suspension bridge connecting Ghyalchowk in Gandaki Rural Municipality-8 of Gorkha with Charaudi along the Prithvi highway on Sunday.
The flood which lasted for around three hours washed away the 130-metre bridge at around 11:30 am, according to local resident Binod Naharki.
The collapse has cut off an important route for residents of Gandaki Rural Municipality-7 and -8 leaving them without easy access to the Prithvi highway.
The bridge was a key route for around 400 households in Ghyalchowk particularly farmers who used it to transport dairy products and vegetables to an agricultural cooperative in Charaudi. With the bridge gone, farmers are now unable to easily take their produce to the market.
The latest incident comes days after a devastating flood on August 26 swept away the suspension bridge at Dhawadighat located further downstream.
Residents had been using the Ghyalchowk-Charaudi bridge as an alternative route after the Dhawadighat bridge was destroyed.
Locals said the 130-metre bridge was constructed only six years ago.
With the latest collapse flooding in the Trishuli river has now washed away three suspension bridges further disrupting transport and access for communities along the river corridor.
