Kathmandu [Nepal], August 16 – Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth is scheduled to arrive in Nepal on Sunday for an official visit, marking his first foreign trip since taking charge of the Indian Army on June 30, 2026.
Seth is visiting Nepal at the invitation of Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel. During his visit, President Ram Chandra Paudel is scheduled to confer the honorary rank of General of the Nepal army on Seth at a special ceremony on Monday.
The honorary title reflects a longstanding tradition between Nepal and India under which the army chiefs of the two countries are conferred honorary ranks by the other country. In December 2024, Indian President Droupadi Murmu had conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army on Nepal Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel.
Seth’s visit also makes him the first high-level Indian official to visit Nepal since the formation of the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
During his stay Seth is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Shah who also oversees the Defence Ministry and General Sigdel. The discussions are expected to focus on longstanding military ties and bilateral defence cooperation between Nepal and India.
The visit highlights the continued institutional relationship between the armed forces of the two neighbouring countries.
